Improving Your Immune System by Making Good Choices

Written By Allen County Chiropractic Wellness Center on December 14, 2020

Nutritional CounselingYour immune system is a natural defense system protecting your body from viruses, parasites, and bacteria. This defense system combats health ailments from a cold to the flu to cancer. Your immune system evolves, changes over time, and the choices you make significantly impact it.

Improve Your Immune System by Making These 3 Good Choices

With so much uncertainty this year, finding ways to boost your immune system can be essential to staying healthy. Here are three good choices that you can make every day to boost your immune system.

1. Practice Good Hygiene

Good hygiene is your first line of defense against germs and infections. Practicing good hygiene techniques will help you avoid illnesses and avoid spreading germs to others. The first step in having good hygiene is to wash your hands frequently and thoroughly. Wash your hands after visiting a sick person, before and after eating, after coughing or sneezing, and after dirty tasks. You can also practice good hygiene by covering your coughs and sneezes with your elbow, refraining from sharing dishes or eating utensils, and washing and bandaging your cuts.

2. Consider Acupuncture

Acupuncture strengthens your immune system by increasing your t-cell, white cell, and red cell counts. It is a holistic approach to various health conditions, including immune deficiency. Acupuncture is also used to manage pain and reduce the symptoms of conditions such as arthritis.

3. Eat a Balanced Diet

Your immune system is impacted by what you eat. Eating colorful fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants and vitamins and minerals can also help boost your immune system. Zinc stops viruses from replicating, vitamin D is antiinflammatory and strengthens your immune system. Vitamin C makes your white blood cells bigger, stronger, faster so they can "kill the bad guys." These fruits and vegetables include berries, apples, red grapes, onions, spinach, sweet potatoes, carrots, and citrus fruits. If you feel ill, antiviral foods such as fresh garlic or a hot bowl of chicken soup can ease inflammation and help you get better more quickly.
